Watching folders
![]()
Introduction
BuddyBackup works by watching particular directories (such as the "My Documents" directory). All the files in a watched folder will get backed up whenever they change. This even applies to newly added files - as long as they are in a directory being watched.
Choosing directories to watch
Bearing in mind that you only have a limited amount of backup space (specified in Options), it is worth taking time to think about which directories to watch.
For example, you could just add "My Documents" to your list of watched directories, but you may find that there is a lot of files in there that you don't actually want backed up.
One way of working is to create a directory called, say, My backups and placing it in My documents. You can then watch the My backup folder. Any important files should be then put into this folder and they will get automatically backed up.
Another way to restrict what is backed up is to tell BuddyBackup to ignore specified files (see Ignoring files).
How to watch folders
Click on the File menu and then choose Watch New Directory or press the watch directory button.
The watch new directory button
You will then be given the option to choose a directory. Once you have chosen the directory press OK.
You will then be told an estimate of how much of your backup allowance the directory will take up and an estimate how how long it will take to backup the files. If you are happy with this then press OK.
If you feel the folder is too big then you might want to consider using the method described in the Choosing directories to watch section above, to make sure only the files you want are backed up.
The size shown by the message is only an estimate because when the files are compressed they might actually be a lot smaller. The size estimate is therefore a "worst case" - it might actually take up less.
The time to backup is also only an estimate partly because of this fact, but also because it is dependant on your internet connection.
As you work on files, more of your backup allowance will be needed to backup the files. The amount should be fairly low since only the changes are saved, but you will find your backup allowance reduces over time as you regularly work on files. See Maintaining BuddyBackup for more details.
