Common Problems

This section contains information about common problems which may prevent BuddyBackup from running properly.
You cannot backup to a buddy even though they are definitely connected to the internet
Symptom: You are not able to back up to a buddy even though they are definitely connected to the internet.
Cause: There are several possible reasons why you cannot connect to a buddy:
- You have a firewall which prevents you connecting out to a buddy
- Your buddy has a firewall which prevents incoming connections
- Your buddy is behind a NAT router which doesn't allow incoming connections
- The Supernode (main central server ran by the BuddyBackup team) is offline
Solution: First you need to determine why you cannot connect.
- Run the "check connection" tool by clicking on the Tools
menu of the BuddyBackup explorer and
selecting Check Connection. If any of the checks fail, the
problem may be at your end. See connection problems
for more details.
- Ask your buddy to run the "check connection" tool as described
above. If either of the tests fail then they may have to see the section on
connection problems. If there problem is at their
end, only they can fix the problem.
Your backup allowance starts to run out even though you have not added any new files
Symptom: You may find that after a while, your backup allowance starts to run out, even though you have not recently added any new files.
Cause: BuddyBackup keeps copies of every revision (save) of a file contained in a watched folder. If you make regular changes, eventually your allowance starts to run out. The amount of space taken up by each revision depends on the kind of work you are doing. For example, when editing a word processing document, it is likely that very little space will be required. On other hand, if you use BuddyBackup to watch files used in, say, software development, you may find that your allowance runs out much quicker (due to regular changes in files).
Solution: It is recommended that you regularly clear out old versions of your files. To do this, open up the BuddyBackup explorer. Right click either on individual files in the right hand panel or whole directories in the left hand panel. Choose Delete Backups and BuddyBackup will delete all the backups held for that file. The backups will also be deleted from your backup buddies.
